For More Information about Kelly Gneiting, go to www.Facebook.com/FatAthlete Of today’s sports worldwide, sumo is likely the oldest— stemming from the Samurai. It is also the very first martial art. Although to Americans the sport is often used as a humorous prop, the intent of the sport couldn’t be further from the truth. Sumo has been layered throughout the centuries with spiritual, cultural, and religious significance. In Japan, a sumotori is a warrior of the highest regard, and the sport is sanctioned as Japan’s national sport— historically revered as a hallowed treasure not meant to be shared. Today, however, 85 countries along with Japan share in it’s majesty as member-countries of the International Sumo Federation (IFS) based in Japan. World Championships have been held since the early 1990’s, and one person at a time is being convinced of the sport’s deep-seeded and glorious merit. As a chartered USSF club (AmericanSumo.org) chomping at the bit to get the word out, have fun, and benefit charities, schools, and government agencies through education, awareness, and yes— entertainment, keep us in mind for your next event. |
